Convergence and Crash

September 6 - November 9, 2019

Press Release

Charlotte, North Carolina – LaCa Projects proudly presents Convergence & Crash, a collective exhibition featuring works by nine women artists and offering investigations around the concept of women and their professions as artists in both historical and contemporary frameworks.

The artistic creations of women throughout history have often been documented through that of muse, lover, or art subject at best—a phenomenon that continues in present-day and permeates women’s placement in the market as serious and relevant creatives, credible in their own right. Examining the history of art more closely, one could wonder if women artists ever really existed. Where are they? And who were they, if they did exist? Why have there not been documented “female Michaelangos” in the history books? From these questions stem the importance of how art history has been written, and how women as a specific group in society have been documented.

Convergence & Crash challenges historical references and assumptions, and bears new perspectives on women’s roles in art creation and how this identification may or may not impact what is created. Using this group of artists as a sample of a much larger body of artists, the result is, actually, chaotic: a diverse range of complexity, and of ideological, economic and social practices.

The artists featured in this exhibition include Vic Iriondo, Holly Keogh, Debora Koo, Ornella Pocetti, Ines Raiteri, Gachi Rosati, Paola Vega, and Ilana Savdie. An opening reception with the artists will take place at LaCa Projects on Friday, September 6, from 6 – 8 PM.
